THOMPSON, ROBERT HARVEY
Robert Harvey Thompson, known to his friends as Harvey, quietly departed this life on April 1, 2020, in Barrhead, AB.
Harvey was the son of Harold Thompson and Gladys Thompson (nee Oliver) and was born on September 24, 1934, in Onoway, AB. He attended a country school in the Sion area and as you can imagine, it was uphill both ways to get to and from school.
He met Eleanor Louise Middlebrough at a local dance and they married on June 19, 1954. Harvey had a successful career working for London Life and supporting his wife, Eleanor and three children; Ellen, Ted, and Craig. Eleanor and Harvey lived in Edmonton until their retirement.
In 1962, they had purchased a shell of a cabin on Lac La Nonne, which was enjoyed by the Thompson family as well as extended family and friends. The tiny cabin was replaced by a joint building project of Harvey and Eleanor’s and this would become their retirement home near Barrhead, AB. Harvey was an active member of the community and held the position of President of the Lac La Nonne Water Enhancement Society for many years. Harvey had a love of nature and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. Harvey also enjoyed an active life going for daily walks, golfing, working on building projects and curling.
In 2011, Eleanor was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and so began the next phase of Harvey’s life as he looked out for her care until her death in 2015. During their time at Lac La Nonne, he and Eleanor became friends with Doreen Hagen. Later Doreen became Harvey’s travel and living companion until her death on March 3, 2020.
Harvey is predeceased by his wife Eleanor, his parents, Harold and Gladys Thompson, sister-in-law, Wynn Thompson and brother-in-law Maurice Muller.
His life will be forever cherished by his children; Ellen Thompson-Jennings (Kevin Jennings) of Edmonton, Ted Thompson (Angie) of Fairview, Craig Thompson (Donna) of Calgary. Grandchildren; Jason Thompson of Edmonton, Jesse Zasiedko of Carvel, Travis Thompson (Amber) of Cochrane, Clayton Thompson (Kelli) of Edmonton and Miranda Janzen (Braydon) of Edmonton; great-grandchildren; Zander Gache of Barrhead and baby Janzen soon to arrive. Harvey is also survived by his brother, Ken, and sisters; Betty Muller and Carol Borle (Marcel).
Our family would like to thank Dr. A.M. Tawfik and the Staff at the Barrhead and Westlock Healthcare Centres for their kind and loving care of Harvey over the past month. We would also like to thank the Staff at Klondike Place who made it home.
There will be a Celebration of Harvey’s life to be announced by the family at a later date. If you wish to pay tribute to Harvey, you can do so by donating to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation.
