WESTLOCK – After undergoing extensive upgrades the Westlock Airport (CES4) held a grand re-opening Sept. 28, hosted jointly by the Westlock Flying Club, Westlock County and the Town of Westlock.
The extensive $2.1 million upgrades included runway resurfacing, apron enlargement, and installation of new ARCAL lighting. The provincial government funded 75 per cent of the project with the Town of Westlock and County of Westlock cost-shared the remaining 25 per cent.
“It’s 99 per cent complete,” said Westlock County Chief Administrative Officer Tony Kulbisky, adding that the lighting should be finished within a week.
MLA Glen van Dijken for Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock riding attended the event and said, “Infrastructure like this helps keep rural Alberta thriving.”
Other dignitaries on hand included Westlock County Reeve Christine Wiese, Westlock County Coun. Sherri Provencal, and Town of Westlock Coun. Murtaza Jamaly.
Hundreds of people from the region attended the grand re-opening that featured a free fly/drive-in breakfast, face painting, and a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The Westlock Airport is located about five minutes from Westlock and 50 minutes north of Edmonton. Ultralights, small, certified aircraft, homebuilt aircraft, helicopters, and small jets use the facility. It is jointly owned by the County of Westlock and Town of Westlock.
