WESTLOCK – At the Town of Westlock Council Meeting on Monday, Dec. 9 Council adopted an interim 2025 budget.
Westlock’s CAO, Simone Wiley, explained that administration typically looks for council to pass 50 per cent of the current year's operating budget while deliberations for the new budget continue.
“I think that is just where we are in the process, and it makes sense for an interim budget at the moment," Coun. Murtaza Jamaly said.
Coun. David Truckey said that it is important that the town keep the wheels of the finance department rolling.
This is not unusual for municipalities to approve an interim budget with Westlock County and the Village of Clyde also adopting an interim budget in December.
Under the Municipal Government Act, each council must adopt a 50 per cent interim budget for the start of the year.
Once the actual budget is adopted the interim budget is then no longer active.
An interim budget is adopted to allow the municipal budget to continue operating under financial guidelines for the 2025 fiscal year.
The Town of Westlock council’s goal is to be responsible for a sustainable budget that meets the community’s needs in the future.
