WESTLOCK— A collision between two vehicles on Thursday, Feb. 6 just outside of Legal has resulted in the death of a 73-year-old woman from Sturgeon County and a 83-year-old woman from Rochester. Another individual suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Morinville RCMP responded to a report of a serious, two-vehicle collision on Highway 2 at Township Road 580 at 11:37 a.m. Emergency crews tended to multiple injuries upon their arrival, with peace officers blocking off highway 2 from drivers northbound and southbound.
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, acting Alberta RCMP media relations manager said, “the driver and lone occupant of one of the vehicles, a 73-year-old female Sturgeon County resident, was deceased. The passenger of the other vehicle, an 83-year-old female Rochester resident, was also deceased. The driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.”
Those heading northbound on Highway 2 were rerouted using Range Road 253 to Township Road 580. Southbound drivers were rerouted via township road 580 to range road 254 to secondary Hwy 651. Snowplows and sanders were present along both routes.
RCMP stayed on scene until 5:15 p.m., at which point emergency crews cleared the area and traffic was resumed.
Road conditions are believes to have played a factor in the collision.
Reports had indicated that “one of the vehicles, a pick-up, lost control and went into oncoming traffic, where it struck another pick-up,” said Cpl. Savinkoff.
The RCMP expresses our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
