WESTLOCK – A youth violated his Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) after assaulting his mother when she refused to buy him alcohol. The youth also considered stabbing RCMP officers, court heard.
The youth, who can’t be identified because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, ended up spending almost 24 hours in RCMP jail cells.
“It was quite a process to get him out,” defence lawyer Richard Forbes told the court.
In September 2024, the youth got into an argument with his mother after he was drinking alcohol and demanded that she buy him alcohol. When she refused, the youth started yelling, screaming, calling her names, punching walls and throwing pictures around the house.
The mother called the police and when they arrived they found him locked in his downstairs bedroom, refusing to open the door for the officers. They forced entry and arrested him. His girlfriend walked towards the officers and started screaming at them to let him go.
The accused told the officers, “(Expletive) off, she is the reason I didn’t (expletive) come after you guys with a knife.”
Forbes told the court that the youth is now receiving counselling and is seeing a child psychiatrist at the University of Alberta Hospital. He is also on medication.
“With a good night sleep, he is able to manage some of his emotions,” said Forbes.
The Crown said that the youth has five previous youth convictions.
Justice Gordon Putnam handed the youth 15 months of probation on Jan. 22 in Westlock Court of Justice.
“I don’t want to see you again, and you don’t want to see me again.”
