Only leaves and grass are allowed at Clyde's compost facility.

CLYDE – Stop throwing your branches and garbage where they don’t belong. That’s the message Clyde council wants to get out to people about its compost facility.

The village is facing maintenance problems with the facility because it has become labour intensive for public works to keep cleaning up prohibited debris, as well as move and turn the piles, said Chief Administrative Officer Jaye Parrent during the village’s public policy and priorities meeting on Sept. 16.

“Part of the problem is education,” said Coun. Alex Strembesky, adding that the sign at the entrance – which clearly states only grass and leaves – should be moved and be put on the fence so that people see it.

Strembesky said that people may not notice the sign when they enter the facility but they should notice it if it's on the fence near where they dispose of compost.

In her report, Parrent said that the compost facility hours were modified to business hours but they continue see abuse, such as branches and other prohibited items being dumped.

“There have also been instances where individuals have left waste outside the gate over the weekend, requiring public works to clean up on Monday,” she added. “We are unable to determine if it is residents or county residents abusing the facility.”

The council committee unanimously voted in favour of a recommendation that administration have the sign moved on to the fence and only keep the compost facility open from April to October.
