WESTLOCK — Alberta premier Danielle Smith will be joining United Conservative Party (UCP) members and other area residents for a fundraising luncheon at the Westlock Memorial Hall, Aug. 16.
The event, hosted by the Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock UCP constituency association, will welcome Smith, leader of the UCP, along with Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock MLA Glenn Van Dijken.
“She’s actually coming to be in the fair parade at 10:30 a.m. and then we’re having a dinner with her at the memorial hall starting at noon,” said Bill Hall, constituency association president. “That is a fundraiser for our constituency. (We’re) getting ready so we have money for the next election.”
Hall noted the association fundraises throughout the year to help with the costs of running the party and the constituency. “We never quit fundraising and usually try to do one event a year for sure,” he said.
Smith is expected to share her vision on some key issues for Alberta and may have time for a short question-and-answer period following speeches. The event will also include information about the proposed Alberta Pension Plan (APP) and a short presentation from Mitch Sylvestre.
“The government is in favour of doing that (APP) so we support what they’re doing,” said Hall. “There’ll be limited time for them (to speak), but they’ll be there with a lot of information for people to pick up.”
Residents wishing to attend the luncheon do not have to be a card-carrying UCP member, and is open to anyone noted Hall, adding there are currently about 900 members in the Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock UCP constituency association.
Tickets are $100 and are going fast.
“Anybody is welcome,” said Hall. “We have well over 200 sold at the present and (the memorial hall) can go to about 280 so I expect by the end of next week we’ll probably be sold out.”
