Driver of SUV killed in Thanksgiving weekend collision

The driver of the other vehicle taken to a city hospital and is in recovery following surgery

BARRHEAD - A driver was killed and the other seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision outside of Neerlandia, near Vega, on Sunday, Oct. 13.

A pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle (SUV) collided at about 1:50 p.m. at the Highway 769 and Highway 661 intersection.

Barrhead RCMP Detachment commander Sgt. Colin Hack said the SUV travelling west failed to stop at the stop sign going through the intersection when it was hit by a southbound pickup truck.

He added that the driver of the SUV was declared deceased at the scene and that medical examiner officials are still working on identifying the individual so they can notify the next of kin, noting the vehicle caught on fire after the collision.

No other individuals were in the vehicles.

Hack said the driver of the pickup truck emergency medical service personnel to a hospital in the city for surgery and is now in recovery.

He added that STARS Air Ambulance had been dispatched to the scene, but it was diverted on route to a higher priority call.
