On Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada issued a tornado watch for Athabasca and Island Lake.
According to the statement, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with the potential to produce tornadoes, very large hail, flooding rain, deadly lightning and powerful winds.
Environment Canada is advising locals to secure outdoor property, and not to wait for warnings to take shelter if they see severe weather approaching.
