WESTLOCK – A woman who was previously “lost” in the justice system is facing a new ordeal involving an incident with a dog while on remand, Westlock Court of Justice heard.

Erin Noella Schembri was scheduled to appear on March 5 via CCTV, but didn’t.

“Ms. Schembri is in Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre,” said defence lawyer Richard Forbes. “I called their CCTV room on the break and was advised there was an incident with a dog this morning and Ms. Schembri is receiving medical attention.”

“With a dog?” asked Justice Carrie-Anne Downey.

“And that she will be unavailable for court,” continued Forbes.

“I’m sorry, wait,” said Justice Downey. “She is in Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre?

“Yes,” said Forbes.

“And there was an issue with a dog?”

“Yes,” said Forbes.

“OK,” said Justice Downey.

The matter was adjourned to March 12.

In January, court heard Schembri couldn’t appear because she was “lost” in the justice system somewhere and defence couldn’t locate her. Forbes told the court she was arrested by Edmonton police but he couldn’t locate her at either the police cells or the remand centre.

In February, Forbes said Schembri had been located within the system and is in custody. He didn’t say where she was during this time.

In Westlock court, Schembri faces two charges of possession of stolen property, mischief/damage under $5,000, failing to comply with a probation order, possession of a controlled substance, driving while unauthorized, driving without insurance, and failing to attend court.

Schembri faces a charge in Edmonton of theft over $5,000.
