CLYDE – On March 10, Village of Clyde council unanimously passed a Residential Property Tax Incentive Bylaw to encourage residential growth and new housing development in Clyde.

The bylaw allows a maximum one-time municipal tax break of up to $5,000 per dwelling unit built. There will be an exemption period from Jan. 1, 2026 to Dec. 31, 2029.

“One of the goals identified in council’s Strategic Plan is to encourage residential growth and new housing development,” Jaye Parrent, chief administrative officer, told council in her report.

The incentive only applies to the municipal portion of the tax bill and not the education tax.

Council supports post office

Village of Clyde council wants to see its post office continue providing services to residents and will send a letter to Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), the union representing postal workers.

Chief Administrative Officer Jaye Parrent said the village received a letter from the national president for CUPW.  The Industrial Inquiry Commission, established after Canada Post's mail service resumed on Dec. 17, 2024, following a strike, is collaborating with CUPW and Canada Post to examine the future of public post offices.

“I think it would make sense for us to send a letter and add that we need financial services at our post office,” said Mayor Charis Aguirre during council’s meeting on March 10.

Deputy Mayor Alma Cruise Irwin agreed.

“We should send a letter saying that we value to post office. We value the presence of it and it plays an important role in the community.”
