Westlock RCMP investigate fatal Hwy 44 collision

A collision south of Westlock on Highway 44 closed the highway Wednesday evening for several hours.

WESTLOCK COUNTY - A fatal collision just north of the Busby turn off on Highway 44 closed the highway Wednesday evening for several hours. 

Westlock RCMP S/Sgt Jeff Sehn said that the collision involved two vehicles and alcohol was not a factor. 

According to police, on Nov. 13, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Westlock RCMP received a report of a two vehicle collision south of the town of Westlock on Highway 44, near Highway 651.

The initial police investigation indicates that a car being driven by a 16-year-old male crossed over the centre line and struck a northbound vehicle. The 16-year-old driver received non-life threatening injuries. The 49-year-old female driver of the northbound vehicle received serious non-life threatening injuries. A 75-year-old female passenger of the northbound vehicle was pronounced deceased on scene.

Police say they continue to investigate the circumstances of this collision.

Alberta RCMP send their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Traffic was rerouted on to Township Road 580.

Picardville Fire Department responded to the scene, as well as RCMP. LaPrairie Works helped with traffic control at the road block. 

Social media comments had wrongfully indicated it was a "massive multi-vehicle collision."
