WESTLOCK – A woman, Erin Noella Schembri, was scheduled to appear in Westlock Court of Justice on Jan. 22 but the court was informed that it wasn’t certain where she was within the system and defence is trying to locate her.

“I came to court today anticipating making an application to go on as counsel of record,” said defence lawyer Richard Forbes. “Just before court started I called the last number she had and spoke with a man who answered. He advised Ms. Schembri has been arrested.

“I have been trying to track her down at the [Edmonton] remand centre but they didn’t have her there yet,” added Forbes. “There is some indication she might still be in Edmonton police custody. I’m requesting an  adjournment to Feb. 5 and hopefully I can get a hold of my client and obtain instructions and move this matter along.”

Crown prosecutor Gordon Collins told the court that “It does look like she was arrested around Jan. 11 by Edmonton police.”

“I thank my friend and will try to piece together this mystery,” said Forbes.

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) was contacted by Town and Country Today to see if she was in their cells.

“We unfortunately cannot query names,” said Carolin Maran, Acting Supervisor, Media Relations Unit for EPS in an email on Jan. 23. “We would need a time, location or ideally a police file number to look into this further.”

According to court records, Schembri faces a charge in Edmonton of theft over $5,000 and is scheduled in Edmonton court on Jan.31.

In Westlock court, Schembri faces two charge of possession of stolen property, mischief/damage under $5,000, failing to comply with a probation order, possession of a controlled substance, driving while unauthorized, driving without insurance, and failing to attend court.

Justice Gordon Putnam adjourned the matter to Feb. 5 in Westlock court.
