WESTLOCK – To finalize funding for the recently completed airport improvements project, Westlock County council approved $71,350 from the general operating reserve. The costs are shared with the Town of Westlock and the total remaining balance is $142,700, which will be split between the town and county.

The project is complete, said Faraja Amanda, general manager, corporate services, during the county’s regular meeting on Feb. 11.

Extensive upgrades were done at the airport at a cost of about $2.1 million. They included runway resurfacing, apron enlargement, and installation of new ARCAL lighting. The provincial government funded 75 per cent of the project with the Town of Westlock and County of Westlock cost-shared the remaining 25 per cent.

The Westlock Airport is located about five minutes from Westlock and 50 minutes north of Edmonton. Ultralights, small, certified aircraft, homebuilt aircraft, helicopters, and small jets use the facility. It is jointly owned by the County of Westlock and Town of Westlock.
