WESTLOCK — Westlock resident Benita Pedersen is committed to speaking up for traditional conservative values, listening to and respecting the voice of the people and ensuring the public is heard.

If elected to council, she also wants to provide critical thinking, better analysis on proposed policies, bylaws, and resolutions and is not afraid to ask tough questions.

“I am a person who likes to ask questions and I am bold enough to ask questions, even in difficult circumstances. I bring a different perspective to council which will result in stronger, more well-thought-out policy decisions,” said Pedersen. “Being challenged from time-to-time is what makes us stronger.”

A long-time community member, Pedersen has volunteered for Alberta Health Services, FCSS, Westlock Municipal Library Board, Friends of the Library, Citizens on Patrol, and the Christmas Light-Up Committee.

"Council needs to be listening to and respecting the voice of the people. Whether the concerns are expressed via phone calls, letters, rallies, presentations, petitions, or plebiscites. The views of the people must be heard and respected, not ignored nor demeaned.”

She feels there needs to be an increase in transparency, including the way the town releases council agenda packages and would like to see them posted two weeks prior to meetings so that residents and members of the public can review them and respond prior to council votes.

“Council needs to be focused on composing resolutions, policies, and bylaws that are for the people and by the people, rather than pushing forward with items from foreign entities such as the United Nations,” she said. “Rather than our local policies being guided by a foreign entity such as the United Nations, I believe in homemade solutions to local challenges.”

She said other priorities for her include making life more affordable by reducing franchise fees on utility bills, more community events where everyone feels welcome, and hearing residents' questions, suggestions and concerns.
