WESTLOCK – The Town of Westlock is taking the next step in addressing future housing needs with the launch of the Aspendale Area Structure Plan (ASP). This initiative will prepare the Aspendale neighbourhood for development, ensuring a sufficient supply of development-ready land while accommodating a variety of housing types to meet community needs.

“The Aspendale Area Structure Plan is a cornerstone of our Housing Action Plan, reflecting the Town’s commitment to proactively addressing housing needs and supporting sustainable growth,” said Simone Wiley, chief administrative officer for the Town of Westlock. “This initiative ensures we remain forward-thinking in our approach, laying a strong foundation for future development and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.”

The Aspendale ASP will guide the development of this key neighbourhood, with a focus on creating housing options that cater to diverse needs while aligning with the broader goals of the Town’s Housing Action Plan. Beairsto & Associates Engineering Ltd. will lead the project, and community engagement will play a central role in shaping the vision for the area.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Town of Westlock on the Aspendale Area Structure Plan project,” said Baily Lapp, RPP, MCIP, manager of planning services for Beairsto & Associates Engineering Ltd. “This initiative will set the foundation for thoughtful and sustainable development, ensuring growth aligns with the region’s needs and aspirations. We look forward to engaging with the community to create a plan that reflects their vision for the future.”

Westlock’s Housing Action Plan

The Aspendale ASP is one of several initiatives outlined in the Town’s Housing Action Plan, a comprehensive strategy designed to address Westlock’s unique housing needs. Other key initiatives include:

  • Residential Development Incentive Program: Encouraging the construction of select housing types in key areas through targeted financial incentives.
  • Secondary, Garden, and Garage Suite Program: Promoting the development of secondary units in high-impact areas, supported by bylaw amendments and financial grants.
  • Southview Residential Subdivision Project: Integrating new residential lots into an established community to support housing growth.

The Housing Action Plan reflects the Town’s commitment to addressing both immediate housing challenges and long-term goals, aligning with Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) objectives over a three-year execution timeline.
