Shoppers react to Westlock Peavey Mart closing

WESTLOCK – The Peavey Mart in Westlock was bustling with customers Monday afternoon who were surprised to hear that it was closing its doors.

Retail Insider reported that Peavey Mart announced that they are closing its stores nationwide. The manager of the Westlock Peavey Mart confirmed they are closing and directed media inquiries to their head office for comment. Their media relations person has been contacted for comment but hasn't responded by publication time.

Marcel Loogman from Hazel Bluff stocked up on supplies but said he didn’t know that the store was closing.

“I’m just buying lots because I don’t like going to the store,” he said.

Now that the store is closing, he said he will get his supplies elsewhere.

“It’s no big deal. We will live. There’s lots of places to go but what I will miss is the competition in town. It doesn’t hurt to have extra places selling the same stuff."

Jesse Rochon, who said he lives about half an hour out of Westlock came to the store Monday to stock up on dog food and said he hadn’t heard they were closing.

“We get our dog food here. They have a good program where you buy 10 and you get the next one for free.”

Dennis Roth from Slave Lake said he and his wife always stop at the Westlock Peavey Mart on their way to Edmonton to shop.

“That's a shame," he said. "We stop here quite often on our way to the city. We always stop here to pick up bird feed and my wife picks up things from the health area."
