WESTLOCK – Three volleyball players and one basketball player from R.F. Staples Secondary School will suit up to play college ball at different schools for the 2025-26 season.
Jacob McGillivray will play with the Medicine Hat Rattlers in February. He played volleyball for R.F. Staples and now plays on the NOOKS U18 club team.
“We are excited to have him in our program and he will push the other students/ athletes to succeed on the court,” said coach Trever Turner on the Rattlers Facebook page.
“What impressed me most about Jacob was when you asked him to speed up his outside sets in practice, he had quick decision-making with this and was able to do it effortlessly.”
Riley Chattergoon will play with the Keyano College Huskies Athletics in Fort McMurray.
“I am thrilled to be part of the Huskies men's Volleyball team. Playing at the collegiate level has always been a dream of mine,” said Chattergoon in a quote from Facebook.
“I can't wait to learn and build relationships with my teammates. I am eager to get involved in the community and connect with the new people at Keyano.”
Currently he plays for the Westlock Volleyball Club in their U18 program and has been part of the club for three years. He has played for the R.F. Staples Thunderbird’s men’s volleyball team, which reached the ASAA provincial championship level.
Chattergoon also played in the 2023 Alberta Summer Games in beach volleyball.
Braydon Beattie will play with the Olds College Broncos in March. Beattie, who is from Busby, played volleyball at R.F. Staples Secondary School.
“Braydon is a high flyer and hits a crazy line shot,” said coach Ryan Marsden in a quote on the Broncos Facebook page.
“Braydon plays a very important role on his club team and isn't scared to go against some of the biggest blocks. Welcome to the Broncos family!”
Beattie will be studying Business Management while at Olds College.
Kourtnie Menzies is preparing to play basketball with the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves for the 2025-26 season.
“I’m excited to continue developing my skills and building lasting friendships with my teammates!” said Menzies.
The Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves posted on Facebook they are thrilled with signing Menzies.
Menzies won the overall MVP at the 2024 NWP High School Basketball Tournament hosted by the Wolves. She is a two-time Zones champion for 2023 and 2024.
The Wolves referred to her as a talented guard with a killer work ethic, great composure and a drive to excel.
“Kourtnie is a talented shooter who will bring instant scoring ability to our team next year,” said coach Bill Bradley on Facebook.
“Her deep range, quick release and ability to stretch the floor will open up our offence.”
R.F. Staples Secondary School congratulated these incredible athletes for their accomplishments, wishing them luck in the future.
