A man ended up in Westlock Hospital and was later airlifted to Edmonton after his truck collided with another pickup truck northeast of Westlock last week.

The collision occurred at roughly 4 p.m. at the intersection of Township Road 602 and Range Road 261 on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

“One vehicle was southbound on Range Road 261 and the other, they were both trucks, was eastbound on Township 602,” said Westlock RCMP Cpl. Sandra Milner, adding the man sent to hospital was the driver of the eastbound vehicle.

“There is a yield sign on Township 602 but the driver of the eastbound vehicle has not provided a statement to date,” she said.

Westlock firefighters used hydraulic tools to extract the driver from the vehicle following the collision. The man was taken to the Westlock Hospital and later transferred to Edmonton via STARS Air Ambulance where he remains in serious but stable condition.

The drivers of the vehicles were the only occupants and Milner said the man driving the southbound vehicle did not sustain injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor, but Milner said weather may have contributed to the collision.

“The back roads in the whole Westlock County continue to be icy and slippery,” she said. “It was a nice, warm day earlier in the afternoon but temperatures had changed and conditions were a little more icy.”

The investigation is ongoing and it is not yet known if charges will be laid.
