WESTLOCK – A man accused of setting traps to injure RCMP officers has been denied bail in Westlock Court of Justice on Oct. 23.

Cody King appeared by CCTV from Edmonton Remand Centre for the contested bail hearing.

Justice G. Putnam said he was denying King bail on secondary grounds.

During the bail hearing, court heard that Crown Prosecutor Colter McCoy was opposed to King’s release on secondary and tertiary grounds.

Secondary grounds considers the protection or safety of the public and whether the accused is likely to commit more crimes if released. Tertiary grounds address whether the person should remain in custody to maintain public confidence in the administration of justice.

King is charged with two counts of setting a trap likely to cause harm, assault of a peace officer, break and enter, and mischief from an Aug. 22 incident in Westlock. RCMP say they had responded to a report of a break-and-enter into a home where tenants had been evicted and were repeatedly breaking back in.

Brenda Logan, who was King’s co-accused, was also injured in the incident and taken to hospital.

Both the RCMP officer and Logan recovered from their injuries.

Court documents reveal that King faces charges in two other incidents. The charges include possession of stolen property over $5,000, assault with a weapon, and mischief/damage under $5,000.

King has been ordered not to have contact with five people. He is scheduled back in court on Oct. 30.
