The Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock Constituency, currently served by MLA Glenn van Dijken, is accepting nominations for the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal until Nov. 18.

WESTLOCK – The provincial government has created a new commemorative medal to mark the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. A release from the province earlier this year notes, the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal is a “tangible way for Alberta to honour Her Majesty’s service to Canada.”

The medal will be awarded to 7,000 Albertans in recognition of significant contributions to the province — the Platinum Jubilee Medal program is continuing as planned despite the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and will conclude on Feb. 5, 2023.

The Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock Constituency, currently served by MLA Glenn van Dijken, is accepting nominations via e-mail, [email protected], until Friday, Nov. 18.

In a brief interview, van Dijken indicated they have 20 medals to be awarded to people within the constituency, and while some nominations have already been received, they are happy to accept more.

Once the Nov. 18 deadline has passed, constituency staff will go through the nominations to select 20 most worthy.

Who's eligible?

Nominees must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a tangible link to Alberta at the time the medal is granted. The individual must have made a significant contribution to Canada, Alberta, or to a particular region or community and must have been alive on Feb. 6, 2022, the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.

Information required for the nomination must include the first and last name, age, gender, field of endeavour, home address, phone, e-mail, and a 50-to-300-word citation which includes personalized achievements of the individual.

For further information, contact the constituency office at 780-674-3225, while for more on the medal, go visit www.alberta.ca and search “Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Most medals will be officially presented to recipients at presentation ceremonies, which will be organized by program partners and the Lieutenant Governor will also be holding medal presentation ceremonies throughout the year. A list of all recipients will be available once the program has been concluded.
