Westlock and District 4-H Beef Achievement Days were held Sunday afternoon, June 4 for the female show and Monday, June 5 for the steer show and sale.
There are four beef clubs in the Westlock District — Pembina West 4-H Beef Club, Golden Sunset 4-H Beef Club, Double Diamond 4-H Multi Club and Sunniebend 4-H Beef Club.
The four had a combined total of 54 steers to show and sell. The sale weight tallied up to a total of 22,146 pounds for an average steer weight of 1,384.125 pounds. Total receipts from the sale of the steers was $52,134.875 for an average of $3,258.43.
Doing the math, that works out to $2.354 per pound — all figures are unofficial.
For the second time in the past four years, a Black Angus steer shown by Golden Sunset 4-Her Chloe Hein topped the district, proving history does repeat itself.
Chloe also claimed the champion trophy and banner in her first year of 4-H back in 2014, also with a Black Angus steer.
Her steer, with a sale weight of 1,315 pounds was purchased by Westlock Veterinary Centre for $3.75 per pound.
The day before, on Sunday, Chloe also won the Reserve Champion Two-Year Cow/Calf banner and trophy.
This year’s Reserve Champion Steer winner is no stranger to the winner’s circle either.
Hanna Gregoire of Sunniebend Beef 4-H Club had her crossbred Simmental x Shorthorn steer selected District Reserve Champion.
At the sale following the show, her 1,396 pound sale weight steer was purchased by Westlock Terminals (NGC) for $3 per pound.
Hanna won the District Champion Steer award in 2013.
This was her last year of 4-H, and she went out on a high. At the female show on Sunday, Hanna won several District awards, including Grand Champion Two-Year Cow/Calf, Grand Champion Three-Year Cow/Calf, and both Overall Champion Cow/calf and Overall Reserve Champion Cow/Calf awards.
This year, the Group of Four steers was won by Golden Sunset 4-H, with Pembina West taking reserve.
Back again for the fourth year was the Club Carcass competition, and for the fourth year in a row, the District Champion carcass was a Charolais steer, fed out this year by Taya Lusson of the Golden Sunset 4-H club. The Reserve Champion carcass steer was shown by fellow club member Lian Ruch.
Four other carcass class steers were raised, two from Double Diamond and two from Sunniebend.
The Champion carcass steer for Double Diamond was fed by Brookelyn Felske and the Reserve by Cole Littlechilds. Laurel Taylor of Sunniebend Beef had the club Champion carcass steer with Reserve going to Maygen Fairholm.
At club level, this year’s Pembina West 4-H Club champion steer was shown by first year member Rhett Schiller, showing a Gelbvieh x Simmental cross steer. The 1,416 pound sale weight animal was purchase by Neerlandia Co-op for $2.50 per pound.
The Club Reserve Champion steer was shown by Carson Chapotelle, whose 1,366 pound animal was purchased by Westlock Bumper to Bumper for $2.35 per pound.

Golden Sunset 4-H Club Champion steer was also the District Champion shown by Chloe Hein. The Club Reserve Champion steer was shown by Allie Huppertz. Her 1,455 pound animal was purchased by Martin Deerline for $2.325 per pound.
Ryley Patriquin had the Champion Heifer for this club, with Reserve won by Heidi Huppertz.
The Champion Heifer for Double Diamond was won by Eme Artemenko. She also had the Club Champion steer, with the 1,396 pound animal purchased by Westlock Truck Parts for $2.60 per pound.
For the Sunniebend 4-H Beef club, the Champion Heifer was shown by Hanna Gregoire and Reserve to Payton Gregoire.
Hanna Gregoire’s Club Champion steer went on to become the District Reserve Champion steer, as noted earlier. Payton Gregoire won Club Reserve Champion steer, and her 1,327 pound animal was purchased by Westlock Veterinary Centre for $2.05 per pound.
Certainly, another very successful year for the beef clubs in the area.
