Mary Willcock (Valorney)

The family of Mary Willcock (Valorney) are deeply saddened by her passing on January 22, 2023.

Mom was born at Vega on September 17, 1934 to Mike and Bolka Valorney. She was the oldest surviving child (having lost two brothers). She grew up with eight brothers and sisters….. Phyllis, Jean, Jack, Julie, Stan, Florence, Shirley and Allen. Shirley and Allen predeceased her.

In 1953 she married Stan Willcock, with whom 65 years of marriage were shared. Although moving to Barrhead in 2012, Shoal Creek was her home for the balance of her married life.

To all that knew Mom, you will remember all of the wonderful things she cooked… and man could she ever bake! Vegetables came in every year and canning, freezing and making pickles happened! She and Dad learned how to knit before the time of TV in their home… she said socks, mitts and gloves were first on their list. After that she had a lifelong skill of making the most gorgeous knitted and crocheted items. Many babies had outfits, and as the years went on there were sweaters, scarves, and about anything else that was requested.

Many families in the area had Mom come and take care of children during vacations…She had many stories of them, and you could tell she cared deeply for them all.

Mary is survived by her children Pat, Brian, Wendy, and Merlin. Her grandchildren Tara, Alison, Mitch, Nigel, Ellisa, Maria, Jessica, Nick, Vanessa and Marcus. 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband Stan, and her great-great granddaughter Aubree. No one ever had a missed birthday, as she could remember each and every one of them.

Mom had so many people in her life, and although she couldn’t get around physically, her phone was her lifeline and she was able to talk to siblings, cousins and friends all of the time. Those moments were wonderful for her and we are so happy she was able to do this.

We would like to thank the staff who provided care to Mom at the Barrhead Continuing Care Centre and Keir Care. Those that showed compassion and friendship meant so much to her.

By Mom’s wishes, there will be no service. The family will host a gathering for remembrance in the summer.
