ROBERTS, JOHN EDWARD

Jan 28th, 1925 - March 13th, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Roberts of Colinton, Alberta, at the age of 95 years.

John leaves behind his loyal K9 companion, Beaver, as well as a great number of close friends who were as family.

John was born in Buxton, England, where he worked various jobs from an early age and received a degree in education and economics.

He moved to Canada and started teaching at Edwin Parr Composite School in Athabasca. Many locals will remember being taught by John. Then in 1979, he taught in Fort Chipewyan until his retirement in 1984. He chose Colinton as his home, and many more locals came to know him from his last 35 years in the hamlet.

All who knew John could see his life shine through his never-ending thirst for knowledge, his intelligence, fluency in several languages, and his love of books and travel.

He was a kind, well-spoken man who was more than willing to share his stories with anyone who would listen. They ranged from his youth, teaching career, world history, and detailing his many world travels.

His generosity was well known and showcased through his support of many local programs.

Since moving to Colinton, he could always be seen walking with his K9 companion at the time which has included Weenip, Vicky, Lana, and most recently Beaver. Beaver will continue living with his neighbour who cared for him in the past while John was away.

There will be no service held, as was John’s request. However, we encourage those who knew him to take a moment and reflect on time spent with him, and especially his stories. Although John is gone, his stories and our memories of them remain alive and can continue to remind us all of an extraordinary life well lived.

If you wish to honour his memory, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Charities John supported: Alberta SPCA; Plan Canada; CNIB: WWF-Canada; SCARS (our local animal shelter or rescue); Colinton Playground Committee; Alice Donahue Library; War Amps; and the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada.
