Water treatment plant in Whitecourt back up and running

Town declared State of Local Emergency on March 13 in order to preserve water while system was under repairs

Residents of Woodlands County who rely on Whitecourt's water system were also affected by the power disruption at the town's water treatment plant the evening of March 12. It took two full days for the plant to be fully up and running again, during which time residents and businesses were asked to conserve water.

After two full days of dry taps and holding off on washing laundry, the Town of Whitecourt has its water back.

According to a release sent out by the municipality at noon today, March 15, the Whitecourt Water Treatment Plant has been restored to full operation after a power disruption on the evening of March 12 caused the system to go offline.

The news release further states that the water supply is back at a level that can sustain the community’s needs and further hauling of water from neighbouring municipalities has ceased.

As such, the State of Local Emergency that was declared on March 13 has been terminated as of 12:15 p.m. today.

While the State of Local Emergency was in place, residents of Whitecourt and Woodlands County who rely on Whitecourt’s water system were asked to do everything possible to conserve water.

With the declaration now lifted, residents and businesses can now resume normal use of water.

“We thank all community members for their co-operation and overwhelming support to conserve water through this unprecedented situation,” the release states.
