BARRHEAD – The Town of Barrhead will set a special meeting of council to enact the Neutral Space bylaw after voters chose on Monday (Dec. 2) to adopt the bylaw in a plebiscite.

The Town of Barrhead website states: “With this decision, Council will proceed with adopting the bylaw through a Special Meeting of Council where the bylaw will pass second and third readings before being enacted.”

“The Neutrality Bylaw will shape future practices, ensuring town-owned crosswalks and flagpoles will remain free from displays of political, religious, social, and commercial messaging.”

“Next steps include:

  • Passing second and third readings for adoption.
  • Removing all existing decorative crosswalks and the following flags from town-owned flagpoles
    • County of Barrhead
    • Legion
    • Red Ensign
    • Treaty 6
  • Communicating key changes to residents, organizations, and community groups.”

The motivation for this bylaw came from a group of residents that reacted to a Pride crosswalk being painted in Barrhead, siting that the Decorative Crosswalk policy’s purpose was not for beautification or vibrancy.

The Decorative Crosswalk Policy was approved in May.
