The Lac La Nonne Enhancement Protection Association’s (LEPA) annual boat regatta, held July 22, drew participation from all across the county and was one of the best in recent years, say organizers.

“Each year the regatta seems to gain more enthusiastic participants,” LEPA president Greg Hall said, adding while the number of boats was equal to previous years, the number of picnic-goers afterwards far exceeded expectations.

“I think it was in the neighbourhood of 100 or more. The day was perfect for boating and there were even a couple of Sea-Doos and Jet-Ski’s on the water.”

Hall said the picnic, which was situated in the klondike trail park south of the Lac La Nonne General Store, served hot-dogs and ice-cream as well as refreshments.

“We had a number of prizes for Best-Dressed boat, most enthusiastic crew and enthusiastic child or young person,” Hall said.

Hall said much of the conversation he heard during the picnic was dominated by talk of how water quality at the lake could be improved.

“And that, without negatively affecting the local watershed. People also talked about our two-pipe water initiative bringing water from the Pembina into the lake itself and the possibility of an Alum application,” he said.

Alum is a chemical compound, called hydrated potassium aluminium sulfate (potassium alum) and is also referred to as a double sulfate salt.

It is typically used as a flocculant for water purification.

“Everyone seems to be more excited and enthusiastic about caring for the lake than at any time I can remember in the past. LEPA now has membership that includes the Lakeside seniors, Birch Cove, Willow Bend, Killdeer Beach, Winkleman Beach, Mission Beach, Mortenson Beach, Christina Beach, Moonlight Bay, Kirchner Beach, Greendale, Idle Hours and Murray’s Beach,” he said, adding it is incredible to see the various communities banding together on what he feels is an important topic.
