FAWCETT – The second annual curling bonspiel in Fawcett was held Feb. 28 to Mar. 1 with ten teams competing for cash prizes.

“It was a good weekend. It was warm out which made the ice interesting. Thank you to everyone for sticking with it,” said Nick McCann, bonspiel organizer.

The winners were the C. Poly team, the D. Larsen team and the M. Schiller team.

The curlers had to play with a thin layer of water on the ice which made the ice surface unpredictable.

Curlers adapted their curling techniques to work with the ice surface.

Teams played with two matches happening simultaneously on the ice.

Friends, family and onlookers watched from the stands cheering and encouraging the curlers as each end was played.

There was a concession offered throughout the day for everyone to enjoy tasty treats and their favourite beverages.

Supper was a mouth-watering pulled beef on a bun with home baked beans, potato salad and coleslaw made by some of the local chefs who prefer to be anonymous.

The Fawcett curling bonspiel uses cottage curling rocks.

Cottage curling rocks are different from the granite curling rocks used in other bonspiels.

Sometimes they are referred to as pond curling rocks.

The bottom is a steel shell that is Teflon coated with a rubber bumper for take-outs.

The Fawcett facility has a community hall connected to an arena where the curling was held.

Prizes were awarded after supper followed by a community mixer.

Fawcett events are well-attended, and the food is always amazing according to McCann.

The PACO Agricultural Society organizes the events that are held at the Fawcett Community Hall and Arena.

Sponsors for the curling bonspiel event were DL Trucking & Equipment, All Around Heating and Cooling, Tamarack Valley Energy, and Friesen Viney Stasiuk Chartered Professional Accountants.

McCann thanked the generous sponsors for supporting the curling bonspiel and thanked all the volunteers who helped make the event happen.
