BARRHEAD – Members of the Barrhead Swim Club took on a very arduous fundraiser on March 6, with each swimmer attempting to complete 200 lengths of the pool at the Barrhead Regional Aquatic Centre within two hours to bring in money for the club.
Incidentally, 200 lengths of the Barrhead swimming pool works out to approximately five kilometres.
“It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to complete this gruelling swim. It is not easy!” said Michelle Smith, fundraising co-ordinator for the Barrhead Swim Club.
As part of the event, Smith said each swimmer collected sponsorship money from family and friends, with all proceeds going to the club.
During last year’s fundraiser, 11 of the 18 swim club members managed to complete the 200 lengths in two hours. This year, 10 of 25 reached their goal.
“Every swimmer did a fantastic job challenging themselves to reach their goal. This is a tough swim,” Smith said.
She added that the swim-a-thon made for a great evening as many family members came out to cheer on the swimmers.
The Barrhead Swim Club’s 2022-2023 season encompasses five meets, with the last meeting scheduled for April in Stettler.
Smith noted that each club member has achieved many personal best times from their swims throughout the year.
“They should all be very proud of their hard work,” she added.
