Barrhead Men’s Bonspiel final game a thriller

12 teams that competed in this year’s Men’s Bonspiel

BARRHEAD – The Barrhead curling Rink hosted the Men’s Curling Bonspiel from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 with the final games played after supper on Saturday.

“In the A final it was Dean Rau vs Curtis Sommers. It was a great game and went to an extra end,” said Karen Measures Barrhead Curling Club Manager.

“Dean was a little heavy on his tap, Curtis didn't have to throw his last rock and won 6-5.”

There were 12 teams that competed in this year’s Men’s Bonspiel with one team from Edmonton.

These were serious games with stiff competition between the teams.

Teams of all abilities competed while developing their skills during the competition.

‘A’ Final winners were Team Sommers from Barrhead, Kevin Sommers, Ken Degner, Rod Philips and Curtis Sommers.

The ‘B’ final game was played between Grant Balen vs Cam Ray with the winner being Grant Balen.

Dave Mueller played Scott Phillips in the ‘C’ final and Mueller won it.

In the ‘D’ final Bob Clark from Edmonton played against Detert and Detert won it in the end.

The winners received cash prizes.

Sponsors for the curling bonspiel were generous and thanks was shared by Measures.

The A event was sponsored by Rick’s Pedigree Seed.

Leon’s Carpet and Paint sponsored the B event.

Sponsorship of the C event was provided B&B Wilson.

Sunnyside Realty and Parson’s Auction sponsored the D event.

Friday night snacks was provided by Don Wilson Survey's.

It was a great spread of food, and the curlers enjoyed it as per Measures.

The delicious supper on Saturday, Mar. 1 was catered by Mama B’s.

The Neumie Memorial Open Spiel, which is in memory of Wayne Neuman, runs from March 28 to March 30.
