Barrhead Junior High hands out awards

Barrhead Composite High School Awards Winners Shine on Oct. 15.

BARRHEAD – Barrhead Composite High School Celebrated their junior high award winners in front of the junior high students gathered in the gym with family and friends on Oct. 15.

Junior high students filled the seats, and the combined enthusiasm of the event highlighted the student’s achievements. Associate principal, Mike Edwards, new to his role, welcomed the crowd to the event.

“There is a great school culture, great environment and great kids,” said Edwards.

The awards presented ranged from academic to merit to athletic awards.

Principal’s Awards recognize the student with the highest academic achievement in Grades 7, 8 and 9.

Locke Montegomery was honoured with the John Hohol Grade 9 Academic Excellence Award.

Brooke Ouellette was awarded the Grade 8 Principal’s Award.

To obtain honours with distinction, students have earned marks of over 90 per cent in all four core academic subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies).

Grade 9 Honours with Distinction recipients were Ava Bourgeois, Julie Bruns, Locke Montgomery, Brady Parsons, Jazshime Sarmiento, Makayla Schole, and James Tyrrell.

Amelia Henkelman, Brandon Lee, and Brooke Ouellette were presented with Grade 8 Honours with Distinction.

Grade 7 Honors with Distinction were awarded to Jaelyn Chaput, Joshua Fylyshtan, Gavin Swan, and Logan Wood.

There were 28 Grade 9 Honour Roll students, 27 Grade 8 Honour Roll students and 24 Grade 7 Honour Roll students.

To obtain honours, a student must have an 80 per cent average in all subjects with no mark below 70 per cent.

The four option classes combine to form one grade in this calculation. A merit award is given in recognition of a student who makes considerable improvement in their academics, is recognized by an individual subject teacher, and has maintained consistency in all subjects.

There were five Grade 9 Merit Award students, six Grade 8 Merit Award students and eight Grade 7 Merit Award students. Students who exhibit outstanding service, leadership, responsibility, character, and self-discipline are presented the Citizenship Award by the staff of BCHS for making our school a better place.

There were nine Citizenship Award recipient students in Grade 9, Grade 8 and Grade 7. Students who excel in their chosen options courses were presented Options Awards.

Athletic Awards are presented to students who exhibit characteristics such as leadership, sportsmanship, and coachability, as well as being an overall well-rounded athlete as per the presentation documentation provided on the school’s website.

Grade 7 Rookie of the Award went to Gavin Swan and Maddox Luciuk. Ewan McElroy received the Stuart Larkins Award.

Two students were awarded the Ron pate Award – Mallory Swan and Ashton Luciuk.
