Barrhead senior high school awards honour hard work

Oct. 15 Senior High School students gathered to watch their classmates receive academic achievement awards.

BARRHEAD – Barrhead Composite High School created an atmosphere of celebration and recognition in their student community group.

They presented awards in front of the student’s peers and a collection of friends and family on Oct. 15.

“This year our community has donated $25,700 towards 16 of our graduated students’ post-secondary futures,” read the school’s website.

“It is wonderful to have so many parents and grandparents and other visitors come in and recognize our students as they demonstrated their academic excellence,” said principal Slade Sekulich.

He explained that they went with this new event approach to increase student attendance and ability to receive their awards and get the recognition in front of their peers.

“All of the students see what other students in their classes achieved and can inspire others to be inspired.”

Grade 10 and Grade 11 students received their awards with Grade 12 students receiving their awards at Graduation.

The ceremony began with a land acknowledgement and the playing of O Canada, played by the school band.

Full-time students (38-40 credits in Grade 10/11 and 30 credits in Grade 12) are eligible for Honour Roll as described in the presentation.

Students must have an average of 80 per cent or higher from teacher-awarded marks in six BCHS courses.

The four core classes (English, Math, Social, Science(s)) with no mark below 70 per cent and any other two classes, each with a minimum of five credits, including CTS courses. Individual circumstances can be considered by the BCHS Principal.

The Recipient of the Governor General Award and the Top Grade 12 student was Brielle Airey.

There were 37 Grade 12 Honor Roll students, 34 Grade 11 Honor Roll students and 45 Grade 10 Honor Roll students.

Bursaries and Awards were presented in two categories as per the presentation documentation.

Group A Bursaries and Awards are chosen at the school level. Group B Bursaries and Awards are chosen by the community groups that sponsor the awards.

Students had the opportunity to apply prior to August 31.

“Congratulations to all our recipients and we would like to say thank you to all of the individuals and community organizations that support our students through the scholarships & bursaries program,” said Sekulich.

“We really appreciated our Group B community groups that worked with us to make sure that all students who applied received some money.”
