The Blue Heron Barrhead Bowling Alley launches its five-pin bowling league play this month with multiple types of leagues, specialty groups, drop-in bowling and tournaments.

“People have said they love bowling and it's a fun activity. It's a cheap fun activity that gets them out of the house and just gets the blood flowing," Tracy Overeem, general manager said.

The league will kick off on Sept. 9 and run until April, with league playoffs running the last two weeks of the season. Bowlers will hit the lanes once a week and get three games on their bowling day.

But for those who are too busy in September to start a bowling league get another chance to sign up for league play in October. The Farmers League starts in October, after harvest is done, and they play on Mondays, said Overeem. A second late-start league kicks off in October, called the Neon League.

There is also a youth league for younger players and Overeem is organizing a parent and children league to include the very young players.

Overeem said a new air conditioning and heater unit was installed last week, which will help prevent overheating at the bowling alley.

Regular bowlers expressed a need to get better temperature regulation at the alley they will be glad to hear that the temperature challenge has been addressed, said Overeem.

The bowling alley also holds tournaments, typically for single-player participation.

Future tournament details, including dates and times, are available at the bowling lane.

The majority of league groups are for adults 18 years or older.

Following the Bowling Lane Facebook page will give additional information on all the league specifics.

Overeem remarked that Thursdays are the busiest day for the bowling lanes.

There is toonie bowling every month and anybody can participate. The Blue Heron Bowling Alley is open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
