Mayor Rob Balay and fellow councillors voted to approve an additional $15,000 to go towards engineering for a residential area utility upgrade project during their Sept. 3 meeting.

ATHABASCA — Athabasca town councillors have opted to allocate an additional $15,000 towards an infrastructure improvement project that will see utility infrastructure upgraded in a residential area on the East Hill.

During their Sept. 3 council meeting, town officials voted 5-0 to ratify the decision to move ahead with the 42nd Street improvement project councillors made via email in July. Councillors Darlene Reimer and Dave Pacholok were absent.

According to the request for decision in the agenda package, town administration had been working with engineers on getting the project shovel ready. Admin staff identified a cost saving opportunity in July, and after receiving the unofficial thumbs up from a majority of councillors, engineering work began.

The price tag for the project proposal was higher than the $30,000 slated for general engineering in the 2024 operating budget, requiring the official go-ahead from councillors around the table.

With the additional funds, engineering costs for the project total $45,000. Work will involve upgrading the water and sewer infrastructure along 42nd and 43rd Streets, as well as 49 Ave residential area. No start date for construction work is known.
