Last year, Kyle Miller and his horses were the biggest hit of the day, with families lining up to take a wagon ride along Athabasca's Riverfront.

ATHABASCA — With the Halloween costumes and spooky yard decorations stashed away in the closet for another year, it’s time to break out the lights, tinsel, and tree, because Christmas is on its way.

And this year, like many others, the Athabasca and District Chamber of Commerce has planned a Saturday full of family fun for locals to enjoy in an effort to spread Christmas cheer in the weeks leading up to the big day.

On Nov. 23, kids and adults alike will be able to hitch a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh, available at the Riverfront from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The jolly Kris Kringle himself will be in attendance, and families and individuals looking for their 2024 Christmas card front can stop by for a portrait.

Mitts, toques and scarves may be required; Environment Canada is calling for periods of snow and a high of minus 12 for Saturday, but the folks at the Chamber will be prepared for the weather.

Warm cozy fires will be blazing in the town fire pits along the Riverfront, and decadent hot chocolate will be available to warm up chilly hands of any size.

A spread of other games and activities will also be available throughout the afternoon for Athabascans of all ages, so don’t miss out on the first weekend of ‘Tis the Season holiday family fun!
