Athabasca County has reduced its total fire ban to a fire restriction, while the province has lifted the ban in the Forest Protection Area south of Fort McMurray.

ATHABASCA – Athabasca County has lifted its total fire ban, replacing it with a fire restriction for the areas outside of the Forest Protection Area.

Under the restriction, new permits will only be issued for exempted activities, which include burn barrels and fire pits. Any existing permits for activities not exempted are suspended.

The use of exploding targets, or the discharge of fireworks is prohibited.

The restriction does not include recreational fires in bylaw-complaint fire pits, burn barrels with substantiating permits, or essential agricultural burning, including smudging.

Inside the Forest Protection Area (FPA) the total fire ban was lifted in the Mariana Lake South region, although the area outside of Fort McMurray remains under the ban. There is currently no restriction in place for the FPA, effective 1 p.m. on July 30.
