ATHABASCA – When the Athabasca Regional Multiplex reopens following Labour Day on Sept. 5, one very important part of the facility will remain closed.
The aquatic centre at the Multiplex will be closed for two weeks starting Sept. 6, with plans to reopen Sept. 19 after the pool is cleaned and inspected. The rest of the facility will remain open for patrons throughout the pool closure, said Athabasca Regional Multiplex Society chair Dave Pacholok.
“We’re closing down the pool for two weeks because it has never been done before and there’s things that have to be cleaned and painted, et cetera, that haven’t had a chance to be done,” he said in an interview Aug. 27. “We've got dryland training that is going to keep on going for the people that were in the pool for aerobics or spin classes. Those things will continue for people that want to.”
Pool staff will also be kept on at this time to help with the repair and maintenance work, he added.
The busy fall and winter seasons are fast approaching, and with COVID apparently now in the rearview mirror, Pacholok said he expects the Multiplex to once again become a bustling hub of the community, for all members of the community.
The Power Up North entrepreneurs’ conference is scheduled to take over the curling rink at the facility for three days starting Sept. 20, soon after that the pebbled ice will be installed once again. Before that even, the arena ice will be installed to let the 2022-23 season of minor hockey get underway, as a new crop of potential superstars readies themselves to take to the ice.
