WESTLOCK – The St. Mary's Sharks clinched the top spot in a recent tournament that featured five teams on Sept. 20 and 21 in Redwater.
The Sharks finished first overall in their pool with a three-win, one-loss match record.
“This tournament was a good start to our season,” said principal Vance Nakonechny. “Our squad is comprised mostly of first-year players. They showed resilience and togetherness in their first competition.
“All teams were closely matched. Many of the matches went to three sets,” he added. ”The Sharks showed marked improvement as the tournament progressed.”
In the gold medal match the Sharks defeated St. Francis School from Slave Lake in two straight sets 25-16 and 27-25. They had defeated Thorhild Central School in a close three-set semi-final match to advance to the finals.
These teams will all be participating in the zone tournament in mid-November.
The next action for the Sharks is the RF Staples JV Tournament on Oct. 4 and 5.
