WESTLOCK - The Soul Sisters Memorial Foundation is gearing up for its Annual Nelly’s Project, a fundraiser aimed at supporting mental health and suicide awareness initiatives.

The evening will be hosted by renowned MC Danny Hooper and will feature live and silent auctions, alongside a performance by Edmonton-based Celtic rock group the Derina Harvey Band. Attendees can expect a memorable night of entertainment and community support.

“It'll be a fun night,” said Christine Vachon, president and founder of Soul Sisters Memorial Foundation.

This year, organizers anticipate drawing between 360 to 400 attendees. Despite rising costs for food and entertainment, the foundation remains committed to keeping ticket prices at $100 per plate.

“We're trying to be mindful of the economy,” said Vachon. “We would rather have a full house and maybe not make as much but still keep it affordable.”

The non-profit group raises money for suicide prevention and mental health education workshops, free bereavement/grief programs, and to host mental wellness events in Westlock and area.

Vachon started Soul Sisters in February 2014 after her daughter Janelle passed away. As the foundation approaches its 11th anniversary, Vachon reflects on the community support.

“The community has embraced the work that we do and gives us a lot of support. We really appreciate that and we just want everyone to know that we hope that they can join us that night of the fundraiser.”

This support is crucial to helping those struggling with their mental health or needing grief support, she said.

The event is scheduled to take place on Oct. 5 at the Westlock and District Community Hall, with doors opening at 5 p.m.

East coast food will be catered by Rootin Tootin Boutin’s Caterings of Busby.

Those interested in donating items can contact Vachon directly at 780-349-1178, email [email protected], or drop off items with Connie at the Westlock News office.
