WESTLOCK – The Jarvie post office reopened on Feb. 17 after being closed since last summer, which had forced residents to drive to the nearby hamlet of Fawcett to pick up their mail.
The community's original post office burned down in June 2020, and for three years, residents had been receiving their mail from plastic bins set up at the Jarvie Community Hall. However, mail service in Jarvie was halted in mid-August 2024 when both the spare postmaster retired and the main postmaster resigned at the same time. In October 2024, Canada Post attended a Jarvie council meeting and said that postal service would be restored to the hamlet
“People are happy, mostly,” said Jarvie Postmaster Lana Beamish. “We are back to having boxes with keys.”
Tim, who didn’t want his last name used, picked up his mail Thursday afternoon and said he was “very, very happy,” the mail was being delivered to Jarvie again.
“It’s nice that it’s back here,” he said.
Anna said she is glad to have mail back in Jarvie but said it’s an inconvenience they can only pick up their mail when the Jarvie Community Centre is open.
“I’m disappointed there are no outside boxes,” she said. “We drive through Jarvie lots but when (the community centre) is closed.”
Jack, however, said he doesn’t mind.
“It doesn’t bother me any. I come here for coffee three times a week. It’s good for me.”
