WESTLOCK – A man accused of setting a trap last week to cause harm and assault against a police officer has a previous violence-related charge from a separate incident earlier this year.

Cody John King, 40, is charged with two counts of setting a trap likely to cause harm, assault of a police officer, break and enter, and mischief from an Aug. 22 incident. Westlock RCMP had received a report of a break-and-enter into a home where tenants had been previously evicted and have been repeatedly breaking back in. When approaching the door, an officer stepped on a nail placed under a mat, say police.

Earlier this year, King was charged with assault with a weapon, according to court records.

His co-accused, a woman, was also injured in the incident and was taken to hospital, according to police. Her name hasn't been released until charges are sworn.

Both the RCMP officer and the female suspect will recover from their injuries.

King had an appearance scheduled in Westlock Court of Justice on Aug. 28. Instead, lawyer Richard Forbes, acting as duty counsel, asked the court to adjourn King's matter to Sept. 4 to give him time to obtain a lawyer on the new charges.
