WESTLOCK — Westlock residents will decide who will be their next mayor when they go to the polls Jan. 10, 2024 in the town’s first byelection since 2015.

One of the two mayoral candidates is Jon Kramer, who wants to continue his work as a community-builder and to see the town remain strong, safe and viable.

Kramer and his wife Kim have called Westlock home since 2004. From the beginning, he feels the community has embraced them and provided an opportunity to build a life.

“We’ve loved raising our two daughters in this small town of ours and have no plans to be anywhere else. My desire has always been to give back and meet needs wherever I can,” said Kramer. “A large need has arisen in our community with Mayor Ralph (Leriger) moving on mid-term and I find myself in a place where I believe I have both the competency and capacity to meet that need well.”

While Kramer said his goals include “working on our communication and public engagement”, he noted the town needs a mayor who is committed to working within the plan and processes that have given them success over these past years.

“I’m excited to support and build upon the strong foundation that Mayor Leriger leaves behind.”

Over the past two years, Kramer has learned much from Leriger and is able to come to the role with “an already strong alignment with the town’s current councillors, a good working relationship with our CAO, and a vision for serving my community for the long haul,” he said, noting he has a good grasp of the projects and challenges that lie ahead.

Kramer’s work on council involves board and committee appointments including the Westlock Regional Water Services  Commission, Homeland Housing, the Municipal Planning Commission, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Health and Safety, and the Financial Framework Task Force.

He also pointed out the well-respected Town of Westlock council members and administration, adding “we have a strong team in town office and incredible staff that serve this community well,” said Kramer.

Kramer currently works as a substitute elementary school educational assistant and an authorized Alberta marriage commissioner. He continues to be active in youth sports, including coaching the swim club and basketball.

“I am well aware of the effort and care that this position deserves and have made room in my life for the demands that come with it,” said Kramer. “I’m ready to take on the challenge of serving as the mayor of Westlock, if the community affords me that opportunity.”
