WESTLOCK—The Westlock food bank received a significant boost with a donation of just over $4,000 from Sobeys, aimed at supporting its ongoing efforts to provide essential food services to the community. The contribution comes at a time when the food bank and country as a whole is navigating economic uncertainty and increased demand, causing more individuals and families to rely on the food bank's support.
The cheque was presented to the Westlock food bank president, Sharon Kennedy, and treasurer, Helen Renaud, on Wednesday, March 5.
“We’ve so excited to have partnered with the liquor store and the community to provide just about $4200 to the local food bank,” said Vesely. “We are just so excited to be able to provide support for those in need,” he said.
Funds will go toward purchasing more food, maintaining current programs, and continuing their crucial work to meet the increasing need with the community.
“This donation is part of a fundraising campaign that Sobeys undertakes yearly across Alberta to raise money for our local food banks in support of people in need.” said Tom Vesely, co-owner of Westlock Sobeys with wife Susan Vesely.
The generous contribution comes at a good time for the food bank, which is experiencing heightened demand amid economic pressures, including inflation and potential disruptions from upcoming U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports scheduled to take effect in April 2025. These tariffs could lead to rising food prices, creating additional challenges for food banks that are already stretched thin.
In 2023, the food bank supported 3,673 people, with 1,125 children and 224 single individuals receiving essentials. The need continued to grow in 2024, with the food bank assisting 3,964 people in total, including 1,250 children and 262 seniors. The organization has seen a notable uptick in demand, particularly from larger families as the cost of living rises.
Despite this year-over-year increase, 2022 still holds the record for most people helped, serving more than 4,000 people.
Sharon Kennedy has been president of the Westlock Food Bank for the past 12 years. Her unwavering passion for volunteering and helping her broader community began at a young age, when she used to spend time with her family at her local food bank.
“If we didn’t have the donations or the support of the community, we would have to close our doors," she said. "Thank you to Sobeys for the donation and to the community for all their continued support.”
