BARRHEAD/WESTLOCK — The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, along with the Westlock and Barrhead RCMP, honoured retiring commissionaire Art Saunders on Nov. 8 for his nearly four decades of service.
Commissionaires provide security to RCMP buildings and also guard prisoners in the cell block, following guidelines set out by the RCMP.
Art, who worked at both the Barrhead and Westlock detachments (though mostly at the latter), was presented a certificate and challenge coins by Darryl Urano, RCMP/JTFN contract manager of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires.
“Art worked over 27 years with the Commissionaires and another 11 years previous to that at the detachment for a total of 39 years of exemplary service,” said Urano.
“It was clear this was an emotional day for Art, which was understandable. The comments and facial expressions of the staff spoke volumes about how they hold Art in such a high regard and what he means as an employee and friend.”
In an interview on Nov. 9, Art — who is in his 80s — said his years on the job were “quite an experience.”
He added, “I looked after a lot of people. Some experiences worked out well, and others … they just carried on going down the wrong line. But I’ve had a few experiences where it’s worked out very well.”
Asked what he enjoyed about the work, Art said the camaraderie at the detachment with the RCMP and the stenos (ie. The administrative workers at the detachment) was incredible.
“You’re just one big family,” he said, indicating that while RCMP officers and detachment commanders change often, the commissionaires and stenos are the ones who tend to stay the longest at any detachment.
The release notes Art’s big heart and commitment to the job, as well as the deep relationships he’s forged at the Westlock detachment, will always be remembered.
“It was evident the impact he had on the people around him, as he is a kind and gentle man who cares deeply about his fellow citizens,” the release states.
“The Barrhead and Westlock RCMP congratulate Art for his service to the detachments and will miss him dearly.”
