New Brunswick and much of Prince Edward Island are expected to be hit with ice pellets and freezing rain beginning Monday morning.

The messy weather comes as an ice storm that left hundreds of thousands without power in parts of Ontario moves east.

Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for P.E.I.'s Prince County and all of New Brunswick.

It says five to 10 millimetres of freezing rain is forecast to fall over the course of the day Monday.

The agency says similar storms in the past have caused localized utility outages and disruption to transportation.

Highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become covered in ice, and ice build-up on trees may cause branches to break.
