Alberta is rich with incredible camping opportunities in the summer, but there are also many campgrounds that are perfect destinations for all-season camping.
Here are three fantastic places to take your RV in any season:
Pigeon Lake Campground
Pigeon Lake Provincial Park Campground is located an hour and a half southwest of Edmonton. This campground shines in every season. In the summer, visitors enjoy hiking, biking, birdwatching, fishing, boating, and swimming. It is also a fantastic spot to visit in the winter for ice fishing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and cross-country skiing. This campground is located close to the Village at Pigeon Lake, which is a popular tourist destination in the area.
Pigeon Lake Campground has 108 sites with 10 powered throughout the winter months. Please note that water hookups are not available in the off-season. The sites are plowed in the winter to ensure that campers have easy access. Winter camping costs only $20 per night and are first-come-first-served between September 27 and May 12. In the summer, full-service sites cost $56 per night and are reservable.
Carson-Pegasus Campground
Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park, located north of Whitecourt and just off of Highway 32, is a popular all-season camping destination and is a great spot to enjoy all types of outdoor activities. Carson-Pegasus Campground is a prime destination for ice fishing, snowshoeing, and hiking in the winter months.
This campground has 182 campsites in the summer with 27 of them available for winter camping. Winter sites cost $38 per night and the summer rate for a powered site is $43 per night. Like with most wintering camping, water service is not available until the spring thaw.
Dawson Equestrian Campground
For campers who love to enjoy the outdoors with their horses, Dawson Equestrian Campground should be on the top of the bucket list. This equestrian-oriented campground is located just an hour west of Calgary near Canmore. On top of the convenient drive-up RV sites, the campground provides hitching rails, loading ramps, and year-round access to stunning horseback riding trails. Alberta Parks requests that only campers bringing their horses book in this campground.
There are five unserviced campsites available that range in price from $31 to $38 per night. The $38 fee includes two horses and additional horses cost $7 each per night. Water is available, but always check with the campground before going and/or bring backup when camping in the colder months.
Experience Alberta’s landscapes in the crispness of fall, the bright cold of winter, the spring melt, and in the height of summer to really experience everything Alberta has to offer. Packing up the RV for an adventure in any season is a great way to get outdoors and explore this spectacular province.
