Introducing the Athabasca Advocate's 2024 summer intern, Maya Zimmer! Maya is an EPC student passionate about writing and eager for a taste of community news.

An opportunity like this does not come around often, so I’m incredibly grateful to be given the chance to work with the Athabasca Advocate as an intern this summer. As a life-long resident of Athabasca, the community has always been my home. As a result, I appreciate the sense of comfort and support that I feel while working at the Advocate.

While entering my last year of high school at EPC, the pressure to decide what to pursue after graduation is something that can no longer be ignored (as much as I may try.) Under this pressure, I have come to the realization that writing has become a great passion of mine during my teen years. As much as I may appreciate the value of developing thesis statements and analyzing poems written by men who died before the invention of sliced bread, I can safely say that it is not the most exhilarating form of literature.

For a long time, I have been seeking the opportunity to practice my writing on something with a little more substance. At its core, journalism makes this more attainable, which is why I am fascinated by the chance to write human-interest stories. Over the summer, I will be showcasing the interests of fellow community members by means of Q and A, as well as spotlighting historical events from Athabasca’s archives.
