WESTLOCK – Town of Westlock councillors are publicly standing in support of Ukraine and “hope for an end to warfare across the world.”
The town released a short statement March 17 regarding the full-scale invasion by Russia into Ukraine Feb. 24 that has since caused over 200 civilian deaths and pushed millions of Ukrainians to flee into neighboring countries.
“As a level of government, we felt it was appropriate to express our support to Ukraine amidst what’s going on,” said mayor Ralph Leriger March 18. “There are lots of people here in our community who are of Ukrainian heritage and deeply affected by what’s going on.”
The statement, which has been posted to the town’s social media and website, reads: “The pain, damage, and loss inflicted by war and aggression are felt worldwide. When Russia began the attacks on Ukraine, we watched in disbelief. Our country has a deep connection to Ukraine as we are home to many Ukrainians, making the continued onslaught of violence felt deeply within our communities. We stand in support of and solidarity with Ukraine and hope for an end to warfare across the world.”
