Remembrance Day in Athabasca

Ceremony scaled back to 20 minutes, but no less important

ATHABASCA - The ceremony may have been short and sweet, and sunny, this year, but the solemn nature of Remembrance Day was still heavy in the fresh, outdoor air at Athabasca's Royal Canadian Legion this morning.

The -15C temperatures couldn't keep away about 40 people who came masked and ready to distance themselves to see officials and dignitaries commemorate the lives of all the Canadians that have fought for this country since Confederation with wreaths at the cenotaph across the street from the Legion.

At the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, the scaled-down event began as it always does and was much like ceremonies of the past, but with a more succinct, 20-minute presentation that still included a six-person honour guard, the Last Post, remarks and prayers from Legion officials and the laying of wreaths by RCMP and military members, municipal officials and family members of those who have served.

Cenotaphs everywhere
