WESTLOCK – A number of collisions reported near Morinville and throughout the region has prompted Alberta RCMP to caution against travel on highways in much of northern, central, and eastern Alberta.

While past weeks have seen above-average temperatures lingering in single digits, a sudden snowstorm and extreme winds has dropped the mercury down to a chilly –17 C while lowering visibility and creating treacherous, whiteout conditions on highways.

In a statement released Jan. 31, RCMP advise drivers to use “extreme caution” on the roads and to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Additionally, the Town of Westlock has paused scheduled snow removal work to remove drifts forming in the current conditions.
